The Wisdom of Solomon
Open with Prayer:
God, we thank you for this time together, for the technology that makes it possible, and the hearts that connect us. Be with us as we travel, join us in this journey, and help us see and hear you always. Amen.
Read: 1 Kings 2:10-12; 3:3-14 (from God’s Word, My Voice)
King David died after being king for forty years. Then his son Solomon became king. Solomon was a good king. He obeyed the laws his father set up and he loved and worshipped God. God told him in a dream one night, “Tell me what you need and I will give it to you. Ask me for anything.” Solomon replied, “God, you have been so good to my family. My father is gone, and I’m the king. And I feel like a little kid; I don’t quite know what I’m doing. If you will give me anything, please give me wisdom so that I can do the job you’ve given me to do. Give me the ability to know between right and wrong.”
That request pleased God to no end. God said, “Since you didn’t ask anything for yourself like a long life or riches, or that your enemies die, I will grant your request. You will be the wisest king ever. And I will also give you what you didn’t ask for— riches and honor. If you are a good king, and follow my direction as your father David did, I will also grant you a long life.”
If God told you in a dream that you could have anything you wanted, what would you ask for?
What is wisdom?
How is wisdom different from being smart?
Do you ever pray at school? Maybe before a test or a pop quiz?
What do you pray for during school?
We can be like Solomon, we can pray that God show us the right things to do and say.
As we begin another school year, let’s remember that God is with us all day in class, at recess, at lunch, and even on the bus!
Finish with Prayer:
God, Thank you for giving Solomon wisdom. Help us to be wise like him.
Thank you for providing us with: (something God has given you)
God today we thank you for: (something or someone you’re grateful for)
God today we need your help with: (something hard or difficult you need to do)
God today please be with: (someone who may be sick, sad, or hurt)
We ask all this in Jesus’ name.
Amen
