Prayers before Voting

Open with Prayer: God, we thank you for this time together, for the technology that makes it possible, and the hearts that connect us. Be with us as we travel, join us in this journey, and help us see and hear you always. Amen.

Read: An excerpt from “An Election Season Prayer” by Fr. James Martin

Help me remember
what Jesus taught in the Gospels,
and what our church teaches,
especially about the poor, the refugee, the migrant,
the sick, the homeless, the unborn, the disabled,
the hungry, the elderly and the lonely.
Help me remember the “least” among us,
and help me ponder in my heart
how to cast my vote for the good of all.

Ask: What does Jesus teach us about loving, caring for, and prioritizing the needs of the marginalized (ie: the poor, the refugee, the migrant, the sick, the homeless, the unborn, the disabled, the hungry, the elderly, and the lonely)?

What do you think it means to keep the “least” among us in mind when we go to the voting booth?

When we go to the voting booth, we cast our vote for the things that are important to us personally. From environmental protection to affordable education, women’s rights to job creation, it’s important to share why these topics matter to each one of us. If you were to cast a vote today, what would be most important to you? Who would get your vote?

(Parents, you can absolutely tell your kids who you’re voting for and why. Just as it’s important to listen and learn from them, it’s important to share what you believe as well. So, share away!)

Finish with Prayer:
God, we are thankful for the ability to vote because we know not everyone has that privilege.
God, today we thank you for: (something or someone you’re grateful for)
God, today we need your help with: (something hard or difficult you need to do)
God, today please be with: (someone who may be sick, sad, or hurt)
We ask all this in Jesus’ name.

Amen
